Rosa Santiago, a working-class single mother of four, is planning the Quince Años of her oldest daughter, Vanessa.
The Quince Años is not a simple party. It is a coming-of-age ceremony celebrated on a Latina girl's 15th birthday. Modern festivities require toasts, blessings, tiaras, gowns, limousines, top hats—all the trappings of a wedding.
In the United States, Latino families of all economic classes spend thousands of dollars to create an event that will honor their daughters and dazzle their communities. Despite the financial pressure this event creates, Santiago has decided that it is important enough to make the sacrifice. But two weeks before the big event, Santiago's plans unravel, and she is unsure if she will be able to pull it off.
About the LA PLAZA Series: In Latin American Communities, the plaza is the cultural center of town - a place where people meet, where the community celebrates, and where ideas are exchanged. One of the nation's longest running television series devoted to Latino themes, LaPlaza offers viewers a vista into the Latino community through an eclectic mix of award-winning documentaries, cutting-edge music programs, and provocative in-studio interviews. |
